      <image:title>Art Projects - Rainbow Ribbon</image:title>
<image:caption>This rainbow ribbon was one of the first projects I undertook when I decided to try my hand at some artistic endeavors. I found the houndstooth ribbon in an old box of scrap cloth and the beads in an old box I’d had since high school. The ribbon I’d kept for seven years after an event at the Commonwealth Hotel in Boston and always hoped to make something of it. The black-and-white color of the ribbon and the rainbow of the beads alongside the fact that it was Pride Month made me think that I should make something contrasting and colorful to celebrate the occasion. I enjoyed the mechanical nature of the process and the almost mindless actions of stringing beads and sewing lines. Like all Trash + Time projects, this one required more time than skill and represented an investment of time in an endeavor that is arguably a waste of time. This ribbon is not designed for long-term survival, and why spend so long making it beautiful? Still, I like the finished effect. And I like that I made it. Maybe that’s enough.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This envelope was the more extensive project I’ve attempted to date. I received a bill for some routine medical tests and paid online like a proper modern person. When I went to recycle the envelope, I noticed the pattern of privacy bars on the inside and instantly knew that it would make a fun embroidery project. Every day for a month, I embroidered away when taking a break from my writing. I’m pleased with how it turned out and feel the time I put into was well spent.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Homepage Scroll - Memory Wave</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece grew out of earlier efforts with notes and canvas and represents my efforts to physically mimic the process of experience and memory. My creative practice is rooted in writing, and I began this project by gathering notes I’d written from roughly May 2024 through September 2024. I also painted a found canvas with white paint with bits of blue mixed in to mingle the white paper and blue ink that I usually write with. I then began to destroy my notes by tearing them into pieces. I then took these scraps of paper and coated them in paint and crumpled them onto the canvas in whatever form seemed to suit them. I layered these notes, torn them, painted them, and repeated the process in ways that felt organic to the moment and reflected whatever I felt like doing when I worked. The result is a canvas covered in a shape that I think of as a wave pattern.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a vegetarian, I sometimes have issues with iron deficiency and needed lab testing to confirm. The lab kindly sent me a bill for their services, including a return envelope with a repeating pattern of lines as a privacy shield. When I saw those lines, it struck me as the perfect project for a Trash + Time piece, and I dedicated myself to embroidering the envelope with a simple, colorful pattern of back stitches that followed the printed lines. The work took a long time to finish, but I found the process soothing and ultimately satisfying. Does this at all make you look at envelopes in a new way?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Homepage Scroll - A Dead Body</image:title>
<image:caption>Composer Mischa Salkind-Pearl and I collaborated on a chamber opera based on three short stories by Anton Chekov for the avant-garde opera company, Guerilla Opera. Check out an excerpt here! This adaptation explores the eerie and not-often seen side of Chekhov and draws on his mastery of mystery and psychological drama. The storyline centers on two men alone in the woods keeping watch over an object shrouded in white linen. The two men may think they know each other, but their dynamic shifts between friendliness and rivalry as they navigate the tensions of man and nature, the known and the unknown. When a stranger finds them in the woods, their unease grows into confusion and terror. As a work, this opera will be notably minimal in approach. The action will unfold in near real time over the course of a single act. This approach seeks to mimic, capture, and amplify the pacing and drama that defines Chekhov’s stories while also pushing against the bombast of opera to instead rely on the quiet and unnerving to compel and affect.
